A retired, 34-year-old New York City police detective who spent hundreds of hours searching for Sept. 11 victims at ground zero has died of a respiratory disease related to the cleanup.  James Zadroga is believed to be the first emergency responder to die as a result of exposure to World Trade Center dust and debris.  "Unfortunately, I do not think he is going to be the last," Palladino said.  Jan 8 2001

Who Are The People With MS?

[Top of Page]

ENVIRONMENTAL  ILLNESS - (EI)
 - is a term  for diseases caused by the human-made environment we live in.   Some diseases can have either natural or artificial causes.

"The significant problems we face cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them."  - Albert Einstein

Examples of diseases that can have environmental causes are:

  • Asthma

  • Allergy (headaches, sneezing, migraines, acne, sinus pain, etc)

  • Chronic

  • Fatigue Syndrome

  • Chemical sensitivity

  • Electromagnetic sensitivity

  • Other sensitivities (sound, sunlight, etc)

  • Autoimmune diseases (Lupus, Scleroderma, etc)

In the last decade, there has been a dramatic increase in patients with the above diseases, especially children who are the most susceptible. As we continue to expose ourselves to ever  higher levels of outdoor pollution and indoor pollution (fragrances, toxic carpets, pesticides, traffic fumes, etc), the number of people with these illnesses can be expected to rise too. us.ohio-state.edu/~steen/ei/

Other diseases may also be considered environmentally induced, such as Parkinson's and Multiple Sclerosis, but the information is more speculative. Even though cancer can be caused by chemical exposures, it is generally not considered an Environmental Illness.

Sept. 10, 2001 -- There's hot news about cool clothing for people with multiple sclerosis (MS) -- and we're not talking about the latest fashions. Researchers from the Netherlands report that the symptom relief that many MS patients experience when they wear specially designed cooling garments may be due to a temporary decrease in the body's production of the chemical nitric oxide.

Cold Can Also Be a Problem

Some people with MS notice that symptoms, particularly spasticity, become worse in cold weather.  It is generally recommended that people with MS who are sensitive to temperature try to avoid extremes of either hot or cold, and that people who are considering a move to a better climate, if they have  the luxury,  try to visit first to see if the climate change is, indeed, beneficial.
